Action Lines, in partnership with Joffrey Ballet and the Adler Planetarium

Experience the wonders of the universe through interpretive dance. Cosmic Rhythms connects the motion of celestial bodies with the motion of human bodies—the relationships that echo throughout the universe. Featuring Adler astronomer’s expertise, breathtaking imagery, and bold choreography by Joffrey Ballet dancer Xavier Nuñez, Cosmic Rhythms takes audiences on a mesmerizing journey through the cosmos.

Actions Lines began with three dreamers, a single camera, and some careful guerrilla filmmaking. Xavier Núñez wanted to free the world of dance from the constraints of the stage, and brought on a small team to see his dream turn into reality. The world is their canvas. They show up everyday to experiment and express the spectrum of human emotion through the confluence of dance and film. Their mission is to inspire as much as they entertain. Learn more about their team and projects here.

CA Weaving by Sabrina Gschwandtner

“CA Weaving” by Sabrina Gschwandtner considers how nature and the built environment interact with each other, reflecting on California’s promises and failures in the environmental and housing crises it faces. The artist drove between Los Angeles and San Francisco over the last six months and shot 4k and 6k video as she drove in, out, and between the two cities on the I-5, the longest interstate in California. Her editing weaves together this footage into a tapestry for the 150 Media Stream.

Sabrina Gschwandtner is a visual artist and filmmaker. Her work has been exhibited and screened internationally, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the Walker Art Center; the Museum of Arts and Design; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), among many others. Her work is held in the permanent collections of LACMA; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the RISD Museum; the Walker Art Center; the Mint Museum; the Philbrook Museum; the Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art at Rollins College, and the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Art Foundation, among other public and private collections worldwide.

Gschwandtner received a BA with honors in art/semiotics from Brown University, where she studied with media artist Leslie Thornton. She studied video with VALIE EXPORT in Salzburg, Austria, and she received her MFA in film/video from Bard College. She lived in New York City from 2000 – 2015, and currently lives in California. Repost @bitforms: The gallery is closed for install, but many of our artists go beyond white cube spaces. @jonmonaghan’s “Unicorn in the Garden” (2023) is installed @150mediastream through June 30, and depicts a mesmerizing 3D-animated dreamscape that interweaves ancient mythological symbols with contemporary elements. Inspired by the iconic medieval “Unicorn Tapestries”, the artwork reimagines the tapestries as a hypnotic collage that invites the viewer to explore and decode the layers of symbolism and meaning embedded within.

Monaghan adopts the glossy, computer-generated aesthetics and techniques used in video games and advertisements. While this familiarity provides an accessible entry point, the works also probe the viewers’ anxieties about the digital landscape and its potential consequences.

Repost @mcachicago: Next Week!

Join artist Deborah Jack (@debjack0) and MCA Curator Carla Acevedo-Yates (@carlaacevedoyates) at the opening of Jack’s new installation in conjunction with “Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora, 1990s–Today” for @150mediastream on February 15.

“My work explores the relationship of the natural world to memory, personal and cultural. The hurricane, the sea, the shore, the land, and the flora all play a role in creating memorials. In these narratives, I’ve created a seasonal memorial. These works of mine are cycles of memory.”
